Wings of Steel Connect Mountains and Seas, Silver Eagles Build the Future: A Documentary Record of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Global Challenge Program "Air Silk Road" Project Research

Jul 30th, 2025 26
2025 marks the significant historical juncture of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Vietnam and the 17th anniversary of the establishment of the two countries' comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership. Against the backdrop of the Belt and Road Initiative advancing towards high-quality development in a new era, the youth of both nations should stand at the forefront. Taking the aviation industry cooperation as a bond, they should jointly explore new pathways for the sustainable development of regional aviation, striving to be inheritors of China-Vietnam friendship and the vanguard force for industrial transformation and upgrading.

From July 14th to July 20th, supported by our university's "Global Challenge Program" framework, a team of 18, led by Xu Wu, Associate Dean of the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, embarked on an academic research and industry exchange journey centered on civil aviation cooperation. This interdisciplinary team, comprising outstanding students from six colleges, traveled to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Con Dao in Vietnam.

Chapter 1

Deepening Industry Engagement: A Southeast Asian Perspective on Civil Aviation Cooperation

At the Vietnam support sites of COMAC and Chengdu Airlines, faculty and students engaged in in-depth discussions with the frontline teams. A series of professional topics, ranging from "optimization algorithms for route turnaround times" to "practical issues concerning flight operations on short and narrow runways," were explored, providing valuable practical references for international cooperation in the civil aviation field. During the exchange session, onsite experts from COMAC, along with heads of Chengdu Airlines' maintenance team, cabin crew, and flight crew, shared their working experiences in Vietnam and offered valuable advice to the young students aspiring to pursue careers in aviation.
At Alllink Aviation Logistics Company in Ho Chi Minh City, the company's general manager and representatives from the aviation transport industry chain held a discussion with the project team, jointly exploring cooperation opportunities within the China-Vietnam aviation industry chain.

Chapter 2

High-altitude Practice: Field Investigation of Regional Aviation

The project team's journey to Con Dao Island on an ATR72 aircraft, followed by their departure from Con Dao on a C909 two days later, provided a vivid comparative experiment lesson. During the flights, members monitored and recorded real-time cabin noise data for the different aircraft models. This information will serve as a reference for optimizing cabin acoustics. This unique "assignment" completed by the team at 10,000 meters altitude showcased the professional competence of Jiao Tong University students.

On the streets of Con Dao, project members conducted interviews and surveys to study the impact of VietJet Air's wet lease of C909 aircraft and the opening of the Con Dao route on local transportation, residents' lives, and tourism. Feedback from a French tourist who had just experienced the C909 – "The comfort of the Chinese aircraft exceeded my expectations" – greatly encouraged the team members.

During a subsequent seminar on Con Dao's cultural tourism development, the project team held in-depth dialogues with staff from the Con Dao Bureau of Culture, Tourism, and the Con Dao National Park. Both sides engaged in a lively discussion around the integration of the "aviation + tourism" industries and reached a consensus on building an "aviation tourism ecosystem." The local tourism bureau eagerly anticipates using the inauguration of the C909 flights as an opportunity to focus on developing the overseas high-end tourism market. They urgently need professional support in areas such as aviation tourism product design and cross-border digital marketing. During the discussion, the bureau acknowledged that the forward-looking research of the Jiao Tong University team could provide ideas for upgrading island tourism.

Chapter 3

Cultivating Talent Together: Sci-Tech Dialogue between Chinese and Vietnamese Youth

At the Ho Chi Minh City campus of RMIT University Vietnam, the project team conducted an on-site inspection of the university's advanced engineering laboratories, smart teaching spaces, and modern library. They gained first-hand experience of the achievements of this globally ranked university in the fields of educational internationalization and technological innovation. Following the campus tour, Professor Iwona Miliszewska, Dean of the School of Science, Engineering, and Technology at RMIT, held a meeting with the faculty representatives of the project team. Both parties exchanged views on their respective institutions' disciplinary characteristics and professional strengths, and discussed potential cooperation matters such as student and faculty exchanges and joint research.

During the academic exchange segment, Vietnamese Jiao Tong University students Pham Anh Phuong and Nguyen Ngoc Linh introduced RMIT students to the strengths of Jiao Tong University in discipline construction, scientific research innovation, and international talent cultivation. They also shared their vibrant campus life experiences at Jiao Tong University. Student representatives from RMIT, in turn, showcased their university's innovative research achievements in fields like aviation engineering, unmanned aerial vehicle systems, and aircraft design. Subsequently, all students participated in an "Aircraft Design Workshop." Chinese and Vietnamese students were mixed into groups, completing the entire process from conceptual design to model making within a limited timeframe. The youth of both countries deepened their friendship through this hands-on scientific and technological practice.

Chapter 4

Cultural Resonance: Spiritual Heritage under the Fluttering University Flag

Since the launch of the "Nourished by Wisdom, Forged over 130 Years – Global Jiao Tong University Alumni Jointly Relay the Same Flag" event, the university's flag has reached various corners of the world. The project team traveled to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, continuing the global journey of the Jiao Tong University flag.

The Jiao Tong University flag fluttered by the scenic Sword Lake in Hanoi, a witness to millennia of cultural exchange between China and Vietnam. Project team members, together with Vietnamese alumni, stood by the shimmering lake and chanted in unison: "Nourished by wisdom, with heartfelt ties over 130 years, wishing our alma mater a happy 130th anniversary!" Sword Lake, as a spiritual symbol of Vietnamese culture, embodies wisdom and courage in its legendary "returned sword" tale – values that resonate deeply with the spirit of the university motto, "Nourished by Wisdom." The project team deliberately chose this cultural landmark for the flag relay, aiming to let this banner cross mountains and seas, building a bridge to connect the "Air Silk Road" between China and Vietnam, and tightly link the two countries' long history of interaction with the new-era cooperation in the civil aviation industry.

On the afternoon of July 19th, supported by Jiao Tong University alumni, the project team held a project summary meeting. The meeting reviewed the project's implementation and summarized its fruitful achievements. During the meeting, leaders of the research group, technical group, and publicity group reported on their respective teams' work in detail, unanimously expressing their sincere gratitude to the university and the school for their full support throughout the project. Project team members shared their unforgettable experiences and profound insights gained in Vietnam.
